Quick answer: At Stellar Media Marketing, fractional social media director engagements start at $1,500 per month. Compare that with $90,000 to $150,000 a year for an in-house social media hire, or $8,000 to $20,000 a month for many agency retainers. Scope, channels, and whether content production is included move the price most.

Below is the full breakdown: what you're paying for, how the three options compare over a year, and how to set a budget that makes sense for your business.

What are you actually paying for with a fractional director?

You're paying for senior judgment on a part-time schedule. A fractional social media director owns your social strategy, leads the people doing the work, and reports results in business terms.

A monthly retainer typically covers some combination of:

  • Social media strategy and a quarterly plan
  • Monthly content planning and campaign direction
  • Leadership of your in-house person, freelancers, or creators
  • Content review and approval
  • Monthly reporting tied to leads and sales
  • Strategy calls with you or your leadership team

Some directors only advise. In my engagements, I handle it all, from strategy and content creation to posting and reporting. How much hands-on production is included is one of the biggest reasons prices vary.

Fractional vs. in-house vs. agency: what does each cost per year?

The fractional model costs a fraction of a senior full-time hire and usually less than a full-service agency.

  • Fractional social media director (Stellar). Typical cost: From $1,500/month. Annual cost: From $18,000. What you get: Senior strategy and leadership, part time, same person every month.
  • Stellar Essentials package. Typical cost: $1,200/month. Annual cost: $14,400. What you get: Finished content and management from the raw photos and video you provide (no content shoots; excludes YouTube and TikTok).
  • In-house social media hire. Typical cost: $90,000 to $150,000/year, all in. Annual cost: $90,000 to $150,000. What you get: One full-time person, experience varies by budget.
  • Full-time senior marketing leader. Typical cost: $166,790 median salary + benefits. Annual cost: About $238,000. What you get: Full-time senior leadership (BLS marketing manager benchmark).
  • Marketing agency retainer. Typical cost: $8,000 to $20,000/month. Annual cost: $96,000 to $240,000. What you get: A team and a defined scope, but you may not work with senior staff.

How the senior leader estimate works: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median salary of $166,790 for marketing managers (May 2025). BLS employer compensation data shows wages are 70% of total compensation costs in private industry (June 2026), so total cost is roughly $166,790 ÷ 0.70 ≈ $238,000. Your actual costs will vary.

That comparison isn't about cheap versus expensive. It's about what you need. If you need a full team producing content across six channels, an agency may fit. If you need someone senior deciding what matters and making sure it happens, fractional is usually the better value. What makes a fractional social media director cost more or less?

Five factors drive most of the price:

  1. Scope. Strategy and leadership only costs less than strategy plus content production and posting.
  2. Number of platforms. Directing two platforms is a different job than directing five.
  3. Content volume and type. Short-form video, photo shoots, and ad creative add time.
  4. Team size. Leading one coordinator is lighter than managing an in-house team plus outside vendors.
  5. Meeting cadence and commitment. Weekly calls cost more than monthly ones. Longer commitments often get better rates. At Stellar, my monthly social media packages are priced on a 12-month commitment, with month-to-month available on request.

Two more options at Stellar:

  • Essentials package, $1,200/month. You supply the raw photos and video, and I turn them into finished content and manage your accounts. It doesn't include content shoots, and it doesn't cover YouTube or TikTok. Those are video-first platforms that need extensive filming and editing, so they're part of a larger scope.
  • One-time, flat-fee services starting at $200, plus content media days if you need footage captured. See the options here.

How do you know if it's worth the money?

A fractional director is worth it when the results pay back the retainer, and you should be able to see that in your reports. Look for movement in reach, engagement, and above all leads.

Savings can be just as real as growth. One client who moved from an agency to Stellar saved $5,000 a month, and got more specialized, personalized service than they had before.

Here's what results looked like for two other clients:

  • A North Texas outdoor kitchen builder: Facebook views doubled to 212,000 in 2025 (up 100.9% from 2024), and engagement grew 51%.
  • A Dallas-Fort Worth custom pool builder: TikTok views doubled to 36,000 and engagement grew 507.6% in the 90 days from June 19 to September 16, 2026, compared with the 90 days before.

For a builder where one project can be worth tens of thousands of dollars, a single extra job a year can cover the retainer many times over. And because most of my clients stay with me for two years or more, the strategy keeps building instead of restarting with every new hire or account manager.

"Owners ask me what a fractional director costs. The better question is what it's costing you right now to have nobody steering. Wasted ad spend, a feed nobody plans, and an employee guessing what to post all have a price tag too." Kelly Noble Mirabella, Fractional Social Media Director and Founder, Stellar Media Marketing

How much should you budget for social media overall?

Your fractional director is one part of your marketing budget. The U.S. Small Business Administration suggests that businesses with under $5 million in revenue spend 7 to 8 percent of revenue on marketing, assuming healthy margins.

Here's a simple way to plan:

  1. Start with your total marketing budget using the SBA guideline.
  2. Decide how much of your business comes from social, or should.
  3. Set aside leadership first. Strategy is what makes the rest of the spend work.
  4. Budget for production and ads separately so they don't eat your strategy time.
  5. Review every 90 days and move money toward what's producing leads.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fractional social media director cost per month?

At Stellar Media Marketing, engagements start at $1,500 per month. Pricing across the industry varies widely based on scope, number of platforms, and whether content production is included.

Is a fractional social media director cheaper than hiring someone full time?

Almost always. A full-time social media hire runs $90,000 to $150,000 a year all in, while a fractional director starting at $1,500 a month is $18,000 a year. You also skip recruiting, benefits, and training costs.

Do fractional directors charge hourly or monthly?

Most charge a monthly retainer with a defined scope. Hourly or project pricing is sometimes available for audits, strategy sessions, or one-time projects.

What's included in a fractional social media director retainer?

Usually strategy, content planning, team leadership, content approval, and monthly reporting. Some retainers also include content creation and posting. Always get the scope in writing.

Is there a minimum commitment?

It depends on the provider. My monthly social media packages are priced on a 12-month commitment, and month-to-month is available on request. Strategy takes time to show results, so plan on at least 90 days with anyone you hire.

Does the retainer include ad spend?

Typically not. Ad spend is paid directly to the platforms, like Meta or TikTok, and is budgeted separately from the director's fee.
