Quick answer: In 2026, content marketing for a Colorado small business costs anywhere from $0 in cash (paid in your own hours) to several thousand dollars a month. Upwork freelancers list median rates of $25 to $35 an hour, my Essentials package is $1,200 a month for about 12 finished pieces, and fractional director engagements start at $1,500.
The sticker price matters less than what you pay per finished, published piece that actually reaches customers. Here is how each approach pencils out.
What does each content marketing approach actually cost?
There are four realistic ways a small business buys content, and each has a different true cost once you count time, coordination, and what actually gets published.
- DIY (cash cost $0, time cost high): The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for writers and authors at $36.98 an hour (May 2025). If you spend 10 hours a week planning, shooting, writing, and posting, that is roughly $1,600 a month of labor at a writer's rate, and your hour as the owner is usually worth more.
- Freelancers by deliverable (pay per piece): Upwork lists a median of $25 an hour for content writers (typically $15 to $40), $35 an hour for video editors (senior editors median $100), and $30 an hour for photographers. You get pieces, not a plan. You become the strategist, editor, and project manager.
- Agencies and retainers (bundled, with overhead): Strategy, production, and reporting in one invoice, plus account managers and layers you pay for. One client moved from an agency to me, saved $5,000 a month, and got more specialized work.
- Fractional director (senior strategy plus production): My fractional director engagements start at $1,500 a month. Essentials is $1,200 a month for strategy, content production, publishing, community management, reporting, and about 12 finished pieces. That works out to about $100 a finished piece with the strategy included.

What moves the price of content marketing up or down?
Five variables drive almost every content quote I see: volume, video, local photography, strategy, and distribution.
- Volume. Per-piece cost drops as volume rises, because planning and editing get batched. Twelve pieces a month from one plan costs less per piece than three one-off orders.
- Video. Video is the most expensive format to do well. BLS reports a median of $75,420 a year for film and video editors (May 2025), and that skill shows up in every quote. On Essentials, clients provide raw photo and video, and YouTube and TikTok production is excluded, which keeps the price at $1,200.
- Local photography. Real photos of your team, your jobs, and your space beat stock images every time. BLS lists the median photographer wage at $21.47 an hour, but a shoot also means travel, setup, and editing. That is why I batch it into content and media days, and Denver-area clients get special pricing on them.
- Strategy. This is the line item people cut first and regret most. The Content Marketing Institute found that 9 in 10 B2B marketers use AI to produce content, but fewer than 4 in 10 say it has improved performance.
- Distribution. Content nobody sees is a cost with no return. Posting, community management, and weekly Google Business Profile posts are part of the price, or they should be.
Why is cheap content often the most expensive option?
Cheap content costs more when it is generic, because you pay for it and it still does not bring in customers.
In my last 20 free social media audits for Colorado businesses, nearly 60% had generic or ineffective content, and 18 of the 20 had a stale Google Business Profile. Most of those owners were not underspending. They were paying, in money or hours, for content that did not say anything specific about their business, their customers, or their part of the Denver metro.
"Most small businesses I talk to are not overpaying for content. They are paying for the wrong thing: posts with no plan behind them. When you price content, ask what you get per finished piece that actually gets published, and who is doing the thinking." How much of your marketing budget should go to content?
A reasonable content budget is a slice of an overall marketing budget, and the CMO Survey gives you a benchmark for that total.
In the Spring 2026 edition (308 marketing leaders, surveyed January 2026), marketing expenses averaged 9.0% of company revenue, and companies under $10 million in revenue reported more than 13%. Social media alone took 14.3% of marketing budgets.
Run the math on a business doing $1 million a year: at 9.0%, that is about $90,000 for all marketing. A $1,200 to $1,500 monthly content engagement is $14,400 to $18,000 of it, leaving room for ads, events, and your website.
Where budgets are heading matters too. In CMI's B2B Content and Marketing Trends: Insights for 2026, 45% of marketers planned to increase investment in AI-powered tools, 32% in owned media like content, website, blog, and email, and 19% in agencies and outsourcing, while only 9% planned to increase investment in people. Tools are cheap. Judgment is where results come from.
Does it cost more to do content marketing in Colorado?
It costs more when you need someone on site, which is exactly the content that works best for local businesses.
A remote freelancer can write a blog post from anywhere, but they cannot photograph your crew, your showroom, or your finished project in Aurora or Centennial. I am based in the Southlands area of Aurora, so Denver-area clients can book content and media days in person, and that on-site time is priced specially for them. One shoot day can feed weeks of posts, blog images, and Google Business Profile updates, which is how local photography stops being the most expensive line on the invoice. More on how that works in What Is a Content Day, and Is It Worth It for a Colorado Small Business?
What would content marketing cost for your business?
The honest answer depends on your volume, how much video you need, and whether you want someone owning the strategy. I have been doing this for 18 years, and I do the work myself: strategy, content, posting, and reporting. Most of my clients stay two years or more.
See packages and add-ons on my services page, read about content and media days, or book a complimentary call and I will tell you, over a video call, what I would spend on content if it were my business.

Frequently asked questions
How many pieces of content does a small business need each month?
My Essentials clients get about 12 finished pieces a month plus a weekly Google Business Profile post. That is enough to stay consistent without burning out your team. Consistency beats bursts every time.
Is content marketing the same cost as social media management?
No. Content marketing covers creating the pieces (posts, photos, video, blogs), while social media management covers running the accounts. Many packages, including mine, bundle both. If you are pricing management specifically, see What Does Social Media Management Cost in Denver in 2026?
Can AI tools replace paying for content?
AI can speed up drafting, but it does not replace strategy or real photos of your business. CMI found fewer than 4 in 10 marketers say AI has improved performance, even though 9 in 10 use it. Use it as a tool, not a plan.
Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer per piece?
Per piece, sometimes. Upwork's median content writer rate is $25 an hour. But you still own the strategy, the editing, the scheduling, and the follow-through, and that time is the hidden cost.
Why do packages require a 12-month commitment?
Content compounds. My Essentials package has a 12-month commitment because the first months build the library and the later months are when it starts doing the selling.
What is a content or media day?
It is a dedicated shoot day where I capture photo and video of your business in one batch. It is an add-on to a package, and Denver-area clients get special pricing on it.
